Matt Johnson (born 15 August 1961 in East London, UK) is a musician best known as the founder and only constant member of the group The The. Johnson is known for his often deeply introspective lyrics. Musically he ranges from slow acoustic hooks to techno-pop.

Johnson was brought up in east London living in a pub run by his parents. He released an album under his own name in 1981.[2] Two of The The's albums Mind Bomb and Dusk, featured the guitar works of former guitarist for The Smiths, Johnny Marr.[3]

Johnson now spends his time between London, New York and Gothenburg and currently releases a monthly update of Radio Cineola from his website featuring unreleased songs, collaborations and remixes. He has long been a critic of Western capitalism and globalisation.
