Pahiatua

Pahiatua is a rural service town in the southeastern North Island of New Zealand, atcoord|40.4534|S|175.8408|E|display=inline,title, with a population of over 4,000. It is between Masterton and Woodville on State Highway 2 and the Wairarapa Line railway, 60 kilometres north of Masterton and 30 kilometres east of Palmerston North. It is usually regarded as being in the Wairarapa, but for local government purposes it is in the Tararua district, which encompasses Eketahuna, Pahiatua, Woodville and Dannevirke.

Pahiatua was founded in 1881 and the first settler was John Hall. In 1981 Pahiatua celebrated its centennial with a weekend full of historical events, and in 2006 its 125th anniversary with a grand parade of 125 floats, vehicles and horses.

In 1944 Polish refugees were sent to a refugee camp, formerly a prisoner of war camp, a kilometre out of town. In 2004 the New Zealand Polish community celebrated its 60th anniversary.

Passenger trains through Pahiatua were withdrawn on 29 July 1988 and the line is used solely by freight trains, several times daily. The railway station is the home of the Pahiatua Railcar Society, a rail preservation group. The society owns an operational RM class Standard railcar and is restoring the sole extant examples of the 88-seater railcar and the Wairarapa railcar.
