Roy Henry Higgins MBE (born
June 5 ,1938 inKoondrook, Victoria ) is a formerAustralian jockey who rode in the late 1960s and the 1970s. He grew up in the southernNew South Wales town of Deniliquin.His talent in the saddle earned him the nickname ‘The Professor’.
Despite a constant battle with his weight Higgins won almost every major race on the Australian calendar.Fact|date=February 2007
Some of the horses he was associated with include
Gunsynd , Leilani,Storm Queen andBig Philou .He was immortalized by winning the
Melbourne Cup twice onLight Fingers in 1965 andRed Handed in 1967 both for trainerBart Cummings .Higgins retired from riding in 1983 declaring his ambition was “to be a little fat man”. He is currently employed as a racecourse analyst describing the condition of horses and providing tips to racing followers.
