November 29 ,1759 –September 21 ,1842 ) was an American lawyer, jurist and politician fromExeter, New Hampshire . Born in 1759 inPeterborough, New Hampshire , he representedNew Hampshire in the U.S. House and served as Governor of New Hampshire in 1809 and 1810. Smith defeated Governor John Langdon by only 319 votes. However, Langdon defeated Smith in the following election. Smith died in 1842 inDover, New Hampshire , and is buried at the Winter Street Cemetery inExeter, New Hampshire .External links
