In the
Middle Ages Svrljig ( _bg. Свърлиг) and the surrounding region was part of theBulgarian Empire . [Златарски, Васил. История на българската държава през средните векове. Том I., История на Първото българско царство. Част I. Епоха на хуно-българското надмощие (679—852), С. 1918, с. 253 ] In 10-11th century it grew into a center of the southern Timok area. In 1279 theSvarlig Gospel was written there, it is the only source showing the real name of Emperor Ivailo. After the fall ofBranicevo under the Hungarian vassal Stefan Milutin in 1290s Svrljig became a border region. With the process of feudal disintegration of Bulgaria in the mid 14th century it was part of theVidin Tsardom and was later conquered by theOttoman Turks .Demographics
