Owned and operated byRNC Media , it is a private affiliate of Radio-Canada and basically functions as a semi-satellite ofMontreal Radio-Canada flagship stationCBFT due to not having alternative non-network sources of programming available. CKRN does not produce its own newscast, instead broadcasting "Le Téléjournal Montreal" from CBFT.The station first aired on
December 25 ,1957 . It was originally a dual affiliate of Radio-Canada and the English-language CBC. The CBC subsequently launched a rebroadcaster of its English Montreal affiliateCBMT in the area in 1961, and CKRN dropped its English programming in 1962.RNC Media also owns CFEM in Rouyn-Noranda and CFVS in Val-d'Or.
