Stoke Bardolph on the banks of the silveryTrent —the Bardolphs, who once occupied a prominent place in the front ranks of English nobility, as all readers ofShakespeare ’s ‘Henry IV.’ will well remember." IV. (1461). His sister, Jane, thus became heir and married John, Lord Lovell; their son, Francis, was killed fighting against the king at the battle of Stoke-field, 16 June, 1487." The village church is that of
St Luke . Rev. Thomas Arnold Lee, "was born in1889 . He was aDurham graduate who had taught in schools inCambridge ,Singapore andLeeds ; he had also served as a curate inSouthwark Cathedral and atLeeds . During theFirst World War he had been a chaplain to HM Forces...in1948 (he became) rector ofGedling withStoke Bardolph (1948-57), and was made a canon of Southwell in1955 . He then retired toBuckinghamshire , where he was vicar ofGrendon Underwood andEdgcott 1957-61. He died in1972 ."
