- Cape Longing
Cape Longing (coord|64|33|S|58|50|W|) is a rocky cape on the east coast of
Graham Land , forming the south end of a large ice-covered promontory which marks the west side of the south entrance toPrince Gustav Channel . It was discovered by theSwedish Antarctic Expedition underOtto Nordenskiöld in 1902, and so named by him because from the position of his winter hut onSnow Hill Island the cape lay in the direction of his "land of longing" which he was anxious to explore.Cape Longing is the tip of Longing Peninsula (coord|64|30|S|58|50|W|), a
peninsula 9 miles long, situated at the northeast end ofNordenskjold Coast where it separates theLarsen Ice Shelf from thePrince Gustav Ice Shelf . It was roughly charted by Nordenskiöld, and named after the cape by theUK Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) followingBritish Antarctic Survey (BAS) geological work in the area in 1987-88.Longing Gap (coord|64|25|S|58|57|W|) is a constriction in the promontory north of Cape Longing, where the land narrows to 2 miles and forms a low isthmus. The gap is used to avoid the long detour around Cape Longing. It was mapped from surveys by
Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960-61, and named by UK-APC.
