Jim Hawkins

Jim Hawkins

Jim Hawkins is a radio presenter for BBC Radio Shropshire 96FM. He has a late-morning weekday phone-in programme, and a Sunday night rock show, but is renowned for his weekly BookCrossing updates from 11 a.m. to noon on Fridays (British time), which attract a global audience via the BBC's Internet "Listen Live" function.

Background in radio

Jim Hawkins began in radio on the university radio station at University of Warwick. He presented on local independent station Mercia Sound before joining the BBC in 1984, when he wrote and presented News Stand for BBC Radio 4. Before BBC Radio Shropshire he worked in BBC Local Radio and commercial stations across the country as presenter, journalist, consultant, producer and manager in Brighton, Northampton, Newcastle-upon-Tyne/Gateshead and elsewhere.

Professional recognition

Jim Hawkins won the 2002 silver Sony Award [http://www.radioawards.org/winners02/win02.htm] for "The Baldy Brothers," his drive time programme at Century FM, and has been "highly commended" at the BT Regional News and Current Affairs awards.

He was one of five nominees for Speech Presenter of the Year in the 2006 Sony Awards.
