Shirin Rehman was born in
Karachi ,Sindh ,Pakistan on December 21, 1960. Rehman's father, the lateHassanally A. Rahman worked for years in public education and law, and her mother was the first woman vice president of theState Bank of Pakistan . “I was exposed early on to the idea of women working and public life,” she says. “There was always an expectation to go out and earn your own living.”She has studied art history and politics at
Smith College and theUniversity of Sussex .Her performance as federal minister of health has raised several brows. While Pakistani doctors are trained in western medicine since long she while talking to a US health official supported a so called China style "Barefoot doctor" scheme .The scheme involves considerable recruitment of about 100000 female workers whose sole medical qualification is few month or weeks of ramshakle type training and who do not possess even a proper simple school degree. Pakistan produces more that 4000 doctors a year and many are unemployed .
She has been charged with abusing the health services which she heads . Although she is not significantly sick the junior doctors undertaking training in PIMS which is a local hospital are made to visit and attend her daily in office . This was objected to by house officers and other doctors as this unpaid task was not part of training programme .
