Stanley William Wells, CBE, (born
21 May 1930 ) is aShakespeare scholar, who was Professor of Shakespeare Studies and Director of theShakespeare Institute (University of Birmingham ) from1988 -1997 . He is now Emeritus Professor of Shakespeare Studies. He is co-editor (with Gary Taylor, John Jowett and William Montgomery) of the Oxford Complete Works and (with Michael Dobson) the "Oxford Companion to Shakespeare". He has been general editor of theOxford Shakespeare series since1978 . He is married to the writerSusan Hill .He took his first degree at
University College, London , and was awarded an honoraryDLitt by theUniversity of Warwick in 2008.Major publications
