Joseph Meyerhoff

Joseph Meyerhoff (April 8, 1899-February 2, 1985) was an American businessman, fundraiser, and philanthropist based in Baltimore, Maryland. He was born in Ukraine and went to the United States as a young boy in 1906, where he eventually made his fortune in residential and commercial development and construction. After his retirement in 1965 he became president of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He is credited, along with music director Sergiu Comissiona, with re-organizing and revitalizing the group. The orchestra's primary home, the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore, Maryland, is named after him. Meyerhoff is also well-known for his work in the creation of the state of Israel. His son is Harvey Meyerhoff.

Foundation

The “Joseph and Harvey Meyerhoff Family Charitable Funds” is a group of Baltimore-based family foundations whose philanthropic contributions have had significant impact not only on the city of Baltimore, but nationally and internationally as well. Meyerhoff began the tradition of giving in his family that continues to be a legacy today through his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren.
