Rebecca Ann King

Rebecca Ann King

Rebecca Ann King (b. 1950, Hancock, Iowa) is most noted as holder of the 1974 Miss America title. Heralding the arrival of feminism in this most traditional of events, Rebecca King was a law student, who famously expressed feminist political views at the Miss America Pageant's morning-after breakfast following her crowning. Most contestants in Miss America and other beauty pageants are conservative women (i.e. Anita Bryant, who became a controversial anti-gay activist), but Rebecca Ann King was a liberal Miss America, especially for her times, and was pro-choice. Never again would another Miss America be as controversially liberal and very few have been political. Kate Shindle, Miss America 1998, was in favor of AIDS funding and gay rights. Miss America 2003 Erika Harold spoke at the 2004 Republican National Convention.

She received a law degree from Denver University and became a practicing domestic-relations attorney specializing in divorce. She pressured the Miss America Pageant to award points for the interview section of the competition, and has spoken in favor of female empowerment at many schools and organizations. She married sculptor George Dreman and has since used the name Rebecca King Dreman.
