WGEM-DT2 began broadcasting as a WB affiliate. It was a cable-only station, and as a result, had the fictional call letters "WEWB-TV". The station was part of The WB 100+ cable group as The WB required over-the-air affiliates above the top 100 markets to be on cable.
On
January 24 ,2006 , theUPN and WB networks announced that they would cease broadcasting and merge. The new combined network would be called The CW, the letters representing the first initial of its corporate parents:CBS (the parent company ofUPN ) and theWarner Bros. unit ofTime Warner .On
