Vadim Repin (born
Novosibirsk , WesternSiberia ,31 August 1971 ) is aRussia nviolinist . In his youth Repin studied withZakhar Bron and was revered throughout Russia as a child prodigy. At the age of 17, he became the youngest winner of theQueen Elisabeth Music Competition inBrussels , the world's premier violin competition.Vadim Repin played under such leading conductors as Sir
Yehudi Menuhin ,Pierre Boulez ,Riccardo Chailly ,Charles Dutoit ,Michael Tilson Thomas ,Valery Gergiev (with whom he made his United Kingdom debut atThe Lichfield Festival in 1985),James Levine ,Kurt Masur ,Edo de Waart , SirSimon Rattle ,Esa-Pekka Salonen ,Mstislav Rostropovich , andRicardo Muti .Repin specializes in Russian music and
French music , particularly the great Russianviolin concerto s, as well as 20th century and contemporary music. New music in his repertoire includes work byJohn Adams andSofia Gubaidulina . He has recorded violin concertos by Beethoven, Mozart, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich andNikolai Myaskovsky . Repin has also made twoCD s of violin and piano music works withBoris Berezovsky (pianist) and has recorded chamber music with pianistsMartha Argerich andMikhail Pletnev , violistYuri Bashmet , and cellistMischa Maisky .The majority of Repin's recordings through 2005 were on the Erato label. However, in 2005 Repin appeared on
Deutsche Grammophon (DG) on a disc of chamber music bySergei Taneyev alongsideMikhail Pletnev ,Ilya Gringolts ,Nobuko Imai , andLynn Harrell ; and in April 2006 Repin signed an exclusive recording contract with DG.Vadim Repin played the
Stradivarius ‘Ruby’ violin, made in1708 and previously played byPablo de Sarasate , up until 2005. He currently plays theGuarneri del Gesù 1736 "von Szerdahely" violin.His preferred bows are byNicolaus Kittel andNicolas Maline .External links
