Gräfenroda is a municipality in Thuringia in the northeast of the Thüringer Wald forest, Ilm-Kreis district. Gräfenroda is the seat of the "Verwaltungsgemeinschaft" Oberes Geratal.

Gräfenroda was founded in 1290. At the end of the 19th century Gräfenroda was the birthplace of the Garden gnome ( _de. Gartenzwerg). The municipality has a museum of the history of garden gnomes.

In the year 1705 the composer Johann Peter Kellner was born in Gräfenroda. He was a student of Johann Sebastian Bach.

During the Nazi era anti-Semite Artur Dinter lived in Gräfenroda.
