Ngo Si Quy

Ngo Si Quy

Master Ngo Si Quy (1922-1997) was martial arts expert who brought the Wing Chun style of fighting back to Vietnam from where he learned it, China.

History

Master Ngo Si Quy was born to a wealthy family on Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Street (present-day Ma May, Hang Bac, and Phat Loc streets). Since childhood he was interested in music and martial arts. He learned the violin from a priest at the church. At one church concert for the association of Chinese ethnic, the priest introduced him to Cam Thuc Cuong, the son of a Chinese family where Te Cong served as a housekeeper. He admired Quy’s violin skill very much, made a close friendship with Quy, and learned violin from him. Afterwards Cuong introduced Quy to Te Cong, so that he was able to become a student of Te Cong.

In 1946 he joined the Viet Minh, fighting against the French colonial government.

China

In 1956 he came to China and by chance participated in a congress of Chinese martial art in Nam Kinh. In this congress many Chinese masters proposed a means to keep and develop Chinese martial arts into a cultural subject, with the wish to strengthen the health of people and contribute to building up the country. They chose internal styles including Wing Chun as main focus for their purpose. With this mindset, after coming back to the homeland, master Ngo Si Quy taught his students with the same purpose mentioned above. His system was based on what he learned from Te Cong and combined with modern biology knowledge.

Having contributed his whole life for Wing Chun, master Quy trained many generations of student, some of them are mature and carry on master Quy’s work.

He died in Hanoi, at the age of 76.
