In the Life

"In the Life" is a gay and lesbian television newsmagazine that is distributed to public television stations by American Public Television. It is one of public television's premiere educational programs and is nearing its 15th season on national broadcast. It is the longest running LBGT television program in history and is a three-time Emmy Award nominee.

Hosts

"In the Life" is a three-time Emmy Award nominee (including Outstanding Educational Programming) and a six-time award winner from the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association. Recognition of our efforts to promote social justice to improve the lives of LGBT people include a 2003 Courage Award from AVP (New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project) for "achievements in honest and progressive media representation of, and programming for, the nation’s LGBT communities."

In April 2004, GLAAD honored us with the prestigious Barbara Gittings Award for "contributions to LGBT media." In 2006, our report on aging with AIDS was honored with the television industry's Telly Award, an international competition honoring outstanding television video and film productions. Also in 2006, we won the Seigenthaler Award from the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association for "excellence in network television." Previous winners of this national journalism award were CBS News' 60 minutes and ABC News' 20/20. Most recently, ITLM was honored by Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer for our role in preserving and sharing LGBT history.

The series was regularly commentated by Tony Award-winning actor Harvey Fierstein from 2001-2004. Guest hosts for the series have included: Cherry Jones, Paris Barclay, Janeane Garofalo, Lesley Gore, Madonna, Nathan Lane, Howard Dean, Gavin Newsom, Helen Thomas, Nancy Grace, RuPaul, Angela Lansbury, Jerry Herman, Carol Channing, Larry Kramer, Barbara Gittings, Lillian Faderman, Judy Shepard, Susan Sarandon, Billie-Jean King, Lily Tomlin, Melissa Etheridge, Esera Tuaolo, Martina Navratilova, Judith Light, Margaret Cho, Emanuel Xavier, Le Tigre, Lady Bunny, Wilson Cruz, Staceyann Chin and Lisa Leslie.
