Plot summary

The novel is of investigative crime fiction genre, entailing the main character of Penn Cage. Penn Cage travels back to his home town of Natchez, Mississippi with his daughter after his wife died. He is a successful novelist with a legal background and finds that his father is being blackmailed over a long forgotten murder by the criminal that he never turned into the police. Penn soon finds himself in the middle of the hidden racial tension and black prejudices within the heart of Natchez. He soon realises that the case he is in is much bigger than he expected to the national leaders of the US. He joins forces with Caitlin Masters, a beautiful young newspaper journalist and meets his high school love interest in a quest to find justice and the truth.

Characters

The characters of Penn Cage, his daughter, father, and Caitlin, appear in minor roles within subsequent novels by Iles that involve the town of Natchez. Examples are Blood Memory, Sleep No More, and Turning Angel.
