Abo Call

Abo Call

"Abo Call" was the first Aboriginal-focused publication printed in Australia. There were a total of six issues, all published in 1938. It was edited by Jack Patten. The newspaper's tagline was "The Voice of the Aborigines".

Although Patten was a member of the Aborigines Progressive Association, that association's president, William Ferguson, was opposed to the publication of "Abo Call" on the grounds that it was the mouthpiece for its right wing proprietors P. R. Stephenson and J. B. Miles. Ferguson also considered the newspaper's title to be insulting towards Aborigines. 'Abo' is an offensive term, certainly in contemporary Australian use at least. "Abo Call" closed down after 6 months of publication, due to lack of funds.
