- Hereheretue
Hereheretue is an
atoll inFrench Polynesia ,Pacific Ocean . It is the northernmost island of theDuke of Gloucester Islands , a subgroup of theTuamotu group. Hereheretue's nearest neighbor isAnuanuraro , which is located about 150 km. away.Hereheretue Atoll has a roughly trapezoidal shape. Its lagoon is quite deep and it has an area of 29 km².The broad reef completely encloses the lagoon, so that there is no navigable passage to enter it.
Hereheretue is the only permanently inhabited atoll of the Îles du Duc de Gloucester group. It had a population of 57 at the
census of 2002. They all live on the largest islet forming the southeast corner of the atoll, in a village facing thelagoon . However, an examination the atoll using GoogleEarth shows at least 20 structures on the western islet.Administration
Administratively the four atolls of the Duke of Gloucester Islands, including
Anuanuraro ,Anuanurunga andNukutepipi , belong to the commune of Hereheretue, which is associated to the Hao commune.There is a meteorological station in Hereheretue.
Trivia
The
Guinness Book of World Records listed the island, with its archaic French spelling of "Héréhérétué", as the word with the mostaccent mark s in any language.References
