September 24 ,1866 –November 18 ,1929 ) was an American politician from the state ofIowa . He was a member of theUnited States Republican Party .Good was born near
Cedar Rapids, Iowa and studied atCoe College , graduating in 1892. He later studied at theUniversity of Michigan Law School, and was a lawyer before entering politics. He was a member of theUnited States House of Representatives from 1909 to 1921, and was chairman of theHouse Appropriations Committee from 1917 to 1921. He was reelected to a seventh term in Congress in 1920, but resigned in June 1921. He practiced law inChicago, Illinois .In 1928 he worked to elect
Herbert Hoover , a fellow Iowa Republican, as President of the United States. When Hoover took office in March 1929, he appointed Good to be theUnited States Secretary of War and Good was soon confirmed by the Senate. He served in that position for eight months, until his sudden death fromperitonitis caused by a rupturedappendix . He died inWashington, D.C. , shortly after theWall Street Crash of 1929 (October 24 -October 29 , 1929) which caused theGreat Depression . He was succeeded by Undersecretary of WarPatrick J.
