Igor Štiks

Igor Štiks (born September 17, 1977 in Sarajevo) is a writer and scholar presently living in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He has published two novels ("Dvorac u Romagni", A Castle in Romagna) and (Elijahs Chair). A Castla in Romanie has been translated into English (Autumn Hill Books, 2005), German and Spanish and won the award for best first novel in Croatia in 2000. The English translation was nominated for the Dublin IMPAC International Literary Prize for 2006.

Igor Štiks spend his childhood in Sarajevo, but lived in Zagreb from the start of the war in Bosnia Hercegovina in 1992. He studied comparative literature and philosophy at the University of Zagreb. He moved to Paris, France, where he received a master degree in Philosophy at the University of Paris.

He has been actively publishing articles since 1996, as well as essays, literary works and translations in Croatian media (for instance Vijenac, Zarez, Quorum, Europski glasnik, Libra, Fantom slobode, Tvrdja, and so on), in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Lica), Slovenia (Ampak), Serbia (Reč), Montenegro (Art), and Macedonia (Lettre internationale, Blesok).

From 1997 to 1999, he was a member of the editorial staff of the cultural pages of Vijenac (Zagreb), and from 1999-2001, a reporter on cultural and social issues for Zarez (Zagreb).

His first novel, Dvorac u Romagni (A Castle in Romagna, Durieux, Zagreb) won the Slavić prize for best first novel in Croatia in 2000. An Austrian translation by Klaus Detlef Olof appeared in 2002 (Folio Verlag, Vienna), and in 2005, an American edition Slavić prize for best first novel in Croatia in 2000. French and Spanish translations are currently being prepared.

His second novel, 'Elijahova stolica' (Fraktura, 2006), called Elijahs chair in English, has been rewarded as the best Croatian book of 2006. His second novel is very exciting and ambitious. Its story is set in Paris, Vienna and war-torn Sarajevo of 1992.
