"Kuffs" is a 1992 comedy film directed by Bruce A. Evans and produced by Raynold Gideon, starring Christian Slater and Milla Jovovich.

The film was written directly for the screen by Evans and Gideon, both of whom had Slater in mind for the title role. The original music score is by Harold Faltermeyer.

The film is set in, and was filmed around, San Francisco, California, and deals with a type of law enforcement unique to San Francisco: the Patrol Special police franchises.

Plot summary

George Kuffs (played by Slater) is an irresponsible 21-year-old high school dropout who walks out on his pregnant girlfriend Maya Carlton (played by Jovovich) and tries to borrow money from his older brother Brad Kuffs in San Francisco. Brad is the owner of a Patrol Special police franchise, a civilian auxiliary police force. During George's visit, Brad is killed. The killer, a man named Kane, whom George sees fleeing the scene, was set free due to lack of evidence. Turning down a buyout by a local businessman Sam Jones, George takes over Brad's patrol franchise to seek revenge. But first George has to earn respect from the patrol members, and at first all of them want him out. But with the help of Ted Bukovski (played by Tony Goldwyn), a police liaison, he uncovers an illicit scheme led by Sam Jones involving $50 million of stolen paintings, a case Brad was just about to break when he was killed. Apparently, Jones and Kane were best friends who was planning to corrupt their way to power in the city. George decides to stick around and complete the work his brother started.

Trivia

* The original title for this film was "Gun For Hire".
* During the scene where Kuffs asks his trainer why the cadets are all running ("Aren't we all going to be in cars?"), each cadet has their last name on the sweatshirt they're wearing. One runs by that has the last name Gideon, a nod to producer/co-writer Raynold Gideon.

Interesting facts

* During the gunfight on the parking garage, Kuffs and Bukovski hide behind a car for cover. If you notice when Kuffs asks for cover, Bukovski's gun is loaded, then empty, then loaded again. When Kuffs leaves you can see Bukovski's gun empty again.
* Although we do not know the age of Maya, she is still supposed to be in college. Milla Jovovich in 1992 would have been 17 years old when she starred in Kuffs since she was born in 1975.
