Bernhard Wicki fought in the Army against France in WW2Fact|date=September 2008, and his experiences affected both him and his films. As of 2000 there is a Bernhard-Wicki-Filmpreis which awards 15,000 euros to upcoming Austrian filmmakers.
He is famous for his anti-war film "Die Brücke" ("The Bridge"), in which seven boys, blinded by the
propaganda of theNational Socialist German Workers Party , defend their home town's strategically unimportant bridge from approaching forces of theUnited States Army duringWorld War II .Probably his internationally most famous work is his directing of the German scenes in The Longest Day.
[In Michel Quint's novel, Effroyables Jardins, ISBN 2:84412-064-4,Bernhard Wicki appears as an member of the German Army guarding suspected resistance fighters in Northern France.
