A 19-year-old married teenager (
Eleanor Parker ) is sent to prison, after a botched armed robbery attempt with her equally young husband (who is killed). While receiving her prison physical, she finds out that she is two months pregnant. She gives birth to a healthy baby and "temporarily" grants full custody to her mother. The intent is to get the baby back after she is released. However, her callous mother has other plans and without her knowledge, permanently gives the child up for adoption (because the child does not fit into the grandmother's lifestyle). She never sees her baby again.Due to this and other unwelcome events and actions, (including being watched over by a very sadistic and physically menacing female prison guard (
