Tampa Heights is one of the oldest neighborhoods within the city limits of Tampa that's situated in the central part of the city. As of the 2000 census, the neighborhood had a population of 16,393.
Description
Tampa Heights is bounded by the Hillsborough River to the west, Hillsborough Avenue (U.S. Highway 92) to the north, Downtown Tampa to the south, and Seminole Heights and Ybor City to the east. The land area of the neighborhood is 3.5 square miles.
Thomas P. Kennedy is credited with naming the area when he moved there calling it the "Highlands" and it was developed as Tampa's first suburb. [http://www.tampaheights.org/History/Overview%20of%20Tampa%20Heights%20Neighborhood.htm]
Demographics
As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there are 16,393 people and 6,269 households residing in Tampa Heights. The racial makeup of Tampa Heights is 52.4% White, 37.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.5% Asian and Pacific Islander, 6.3% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. 24.6% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
In Tampa Heights, the population is spread out with 8% Under 5 Years; 8% 5 to 9 Years; 14.7% 10 to 19 Years; 29.7% 20 to 39 Years; 24.7% 40 to 59 Years; 11.6% 60 to 79 Years; 3.3% 80 Years and Over. In the district, 93 out of every 100 is male and 95 out of every 100 is female.
