The Castle Gate Shopping Centre may be the new name for Shrewsbury's two shopping malls if a planned new development merges the centres. The current Pride Hill, Riverside and Darwin Shopping Centres could be linked in a £30 million scheme, originally named the 'Darwin Link' project. The new combined shopping complex will have almost a million square feet of retail space. Dunedin were the owners of Shrewsbury's two main shopping centres but they have sold the Shrewsbury complex in March 2006, at a price of £118 million.
The name (and logo) for the redeveloped shopping centre was chosen by local residents. Voting began on 25th July 2005 in voting booths at the centres and online voting commenced shortly afterwards. Over 11,000 votes were cast, with a final push at the town's annual Flower Show. It was announced on August 13, 2005, that 'Castle Gate' had won with 33% of the vote. 'Tudor Place' came second with 31%, followed by 'River Hill' (21%) and 'Quayside' (15%). The name may cause some confusion as there is a street in the town called "Castle Gates".
More recently, the local company Morris Property has begun a five-storey link mall development project on the link site, which will perform the task of connecting the existing shopping centres. It is unclear whether the combined shopping centre will have one name.
