Las Hurdes or Las Jurdes is a "
comarca " in Cáceres Province ofExtremadura , one of Spain's seventeen Autonomous Communities, bordering Salamanca Province ofCastile-Leon to the north.Las Hurdes covers an area of 470 km², bordered with
Sierra de Gata to the north, and the valley of Río Ambroz to the south. It is an arid region. Las Hurdes was once one of the poorest regions in Spain. 1933 short film byLuis Buñuel about the indigenous people ("hurdanos"), shot around the town of La Alberca, called "". Las Hurdes has been long associated with its presentation in the film.
