Dr. Peter Beilenson is a Democratic Party politician in
Maryland ,United States . He is a former Health Commissioner ofBaltimore, Maryland , having served for 13 years under the administrations of Kurt Schmoke andMartin J. O'Malley . He sought the Democratic Partynomination for Maryland's third congressional district in 2006; despite taking a quarter of the vote, he lost toJohn Sarbanes . The seat had been vacated by ten-term Congressional veteranBen Cardin to pave the way for his own run for theUnited States Senate .Named the "Best Civil Servant" by Baltimore Magazine and recognized nationally by the American
Public Health Association for "creative public health work," his dedication to public service was instilled at an early age as the son of Congressman Tony Beilenson, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 -1997.Dr. Beilenson received his undergraduate degree from
Harvard College , Medical Doctorate fromEmory University School of Medicine, and Masters in Public Health fromJohns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health . He also served as an EMT, teacher and family practitioner before his tenure as Health Commissioner.Dr. Beilenson is married to Chris and has five children. He lives in Baltimore, and serves now as the Health Officer for Howard County, MD.
