Pétur Marteinsson (born July 14, 1973 in Reykjavík) is an Icelandic football player. He is the son of former Icelandic international player Marteinn Geirsson.

Club career

He started his career in Fram Reykjavík, and moved to Swedish club Hammarby IF in 1996 where he was a great success. A sought-after defender, Marteinsson was bought by the Norwegian club Stabæk IF, coached by Anders Linderoth. In November 2001 he moved on to Stoke City, a club with many Icelandic players. Unfortunately, the manager who bought him lost his job within a week, and Marteinsson was not favoured by the new manager. Released in August 2003, he returned to Hammarby which incidentally was coached by Anders Linderoth.

In October 2006, KR Reykjavik announced they had won the race for his signature for the 2007 Icelandic premier league season, a move which will see Marteinsson return to his native Iceland to finish his career.

International career

Marteinsson has been capped 35 times for Iceland [ [http://www.rsssf.com/miscellaneous/ijs-recintlp.html Iceland - Record International Players] - RSSSF] . He made his debut in an August 1993 friendly match against the USA as a substitute for Kristján Jónsson.
