The town dates from Roman times. Its name indicates that it was part of a territory known as "the fat valley": a document of 1304 referring to the "Habiate qui dicitur Grasso", a title which gradually became transformed into Abbiategrasso.

April 30 ,1524 , the famed knight Pierre Terrail was fatally wounded by anarquebus ball in Abbiategrasso whilst defending the retreat of the French army from Italy.Twin towns
