Peter Levene, Baron Levene of Portsoken

Peter Keith Levene, Baron Levene of Portsoken KBE (born December 8, 1941) is chairman of Lloyd's of London and was Lord Mayor of London 1998 to 1999.

He was educated at the City of London School and the University of Manchester before joining United Scientific Holdings in 1963, eventually rising to the post of chairman of that group, in 1981. Levene received a in 1989, and in 1997 he was made a life peer as Baron Levene of Portsoken, of Portsoken in the City of London. Lord Levene sits as a Crossbencher.

He had spent 20 years in the Defence Industry before being asked to take on the Permanent Secretary post of Chief of Defence Procurement in the Ministry of Defence, a post which he held for 6 years. Subsequently, he held a number of Government posts and was Adviser to the Prime Minister on Efficiency and Effectiveness from 1992 to 1997. He also served as Chairman of the Docklands Light Railway and subsequently as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Canary Wharf Limited.

Lord Levene served as Vice Chairman of Deutsche Bank, having previously been Chairman of Bankers Trust International and Senior Adviser at Morgan Stanley.

In addition to the Chairmanship of Lloyd's, Lord Levene is the current chairman of IFSL, the Chairman of General Dynamics UK Limited and a member of the Board of Total S.A., China Construction Bank and Haymarket Group.

Lord Levene is an avid Chelsea F.C. season ticket holder.

Married to Wendy they have three children, two sons working in banking and finance and a daughter working in public relations. He is grandfather to 9 grandchildren who live in London, New York and Hong Kong.
