television station for theKansas City metropolitan area . Its transmitter is located southeast of downtown at the corner of East 23rd Street and Topping Avenue. Owned by theHearst Corporation , the station is operated by its publicly-traded broadcasting division,Hearst-Argyle Television . KCWE is a sister station to ABC affiliateKMBC-TV . The two stations share studios on Winchester Avenue near I-435. Syndicated programming on KCWE includes: "Dr. Phil", "Oprah", "Entertainment Tonight ", and "Tyra". The station might take on the responsibility of running ABC programming in the event of news emergencies, sporting events, or theJerry Lewis MDA Telethon when KMBC may be unable to do so.History
Channel 29 was originally home to a low-powered Value Vision affiliate, K29CF. To make way for the new full-powered KCWB, the station moved in the mid-
1990s to channel 48 as K48FS. That station is known today asUnivision affiliateKUKC-LP . [ [http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/call_hist.pl?Facility_id=67838&Callsign=KUKC-LP Call Sign History ] ] KCWE began broadcasting onSeptember 14 ,1996 as a WB affiliate under the call sign KCWB. It was locally owned but managed by Hearst. The station swapped affiliations withKSMO-TV in1998 becoming aUPN station with the call sign KCWE. The station's old logo was similar to that of its Tampa Bay sister station,WMOR-TV . After being acquired by Hearst-Argyle, the station was known as "More TV 29" to match WMOR.By
2005 , it dispensed of the "More TV" moniker but kept the logo style. OnJanuary 24 ,2006 , The WB and UPN announced that they would end broadcasting ans merge. The newly combined network would be called The CW. The letters would represent the first initial of its corporate parents:CBS (the parent company of UPN) and theWarner Bros. unit ofTime Warner . OnMarch 7 , The CW and Hearst-Argyle announced that KCWE would be Kansas City's CW affiliate. [http://www.thefutoncritic.com/cgi/pr.cgi?id=20060307cw01] As the station already has "CW" in their call letters, station management said they would take advantage of that and leave them unchanged. [http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/business/14042769.htm] The old logo was dispensed altogether inAugust of 2006 when KCWE's new logo reflecting the CW affiliation was released. The CW began broadcasting onSeptember 18 . Since The CW does not air programming on Saturday nights, KCWE usually airs movies from 8-10 P.M.Newscasts
For many years, KCWE aired no local newscasts despite being sister station to KMBC-TV. Management cited a fear of "cannibalizing" the KMBC audience as one of the reasons. In
March of2008 , the station debuted its first regular newscast. Its airs for two hours at 7 A.M. on weekday mornings. The broadcasts competes with local newscasts that air onWDAF-TV and KSMO-TV, while allowing KMBC to air "Good Morning America " while maintaining local news coverage within that timeslot. As is the case on KMBC, the KCWE newscast is broadcasted in high definition."KMBC 9 First News on KCWE"
