The station was originally R&B outlet WMRY in the 1950s. But by the 1960s it moved over to 940 and became the current WYLD. After it switched signals the frequency was acquired by Dave Waagenvord and was launched as WWOM (Wonderful World of Music) with a Beautiful music format. They were also the sister station of WWOM-TV at the time. In 1970 F.W. Robbert Broadcasting bought the station and flipped it to its current format.
