Soil Art Gallery

Soil Art Gallery

SOIL Art Gallery [http://www.soilart.org/] is an artist-run, not-for-profit gallery in Seattle, Washington, USA. Located in the newly renovated Tashiro Kaplan Building on 3rd and Yesler, Soil has a rotating membership of 20 - 24 artists. It has received substantial local as well as national press attention.

Founded in 1995, SOIL exists as an alternative venue for artists to exhibit, develop, and advance their work. SOIL succeeds at this by having open submissions, where every six months anyone can submit a show proposal. All proposals are viewed by the membership and accepted or declined on a 2/3 vote. In this way, SOIL can bring both prominent and unknown artists and curators into the established Pioneer Square environment. SOIL shows a different exhibition each month, taking part in Pioneer Square's First Thursday artwalk tradition.

SOIL has had several relocations, including a space beneath the Elliott Bay Book Company, and several spaces on Capitol Hill. In 2004 SOIL was invited by a non-profit arts development group to move to the TK Building at 112 3rd Ave S.

In September 2005, SOIL released a 130-page, full color book documenting its history and artists. Titled "SOIL Artist-Run Gallery, 1995>2005," it features essays by local and national arts writers, features on highlighted exhibitions, and profiles of member artists. The book is available for purchase [http://soilart.org/soilbook/ here.]
