Sir Wil, as it is called by most of its students, is run in a semestered system, and is one of the top tech schools in the city. Its sports teams, which are almost invariably called the Lancers, are home to some of the most talented athletes in Orléans and are one of the top teams of any high school in Orléans. In fact, their junior boys football team won their division championship this year. The 2005-2006 school year introduced a new principal to Sir Wil, Ms. Patsy Agard. In the 2005-2006 school year, the school was one of the first to participate in the first Canadian
Cappies (Critics and Awards Program For High School Students) program, an American based theater review program where student critics from schools all over the Ottawa region review student productions with the chance of having their reviews published in theOttawa Citizen .The school has a thriving drama program. Eric Shaw
Sir Wil made headlines in December 2006 when the school held a mock telethon for CHEO (Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.) This telethon, directed towards the hospital's Oncology ward, was headed by Sir Wil student Eric Shaw. Shaw was a cancer survivor, but had suffered a relapse earlier in the year. News struck home when, for the third time, Shaw was diagnosed with cancer. The brave student came to school every day of the telethon, however, and managed to encourage students to raise more than $15 000 for CHEO. Eric missed the last portion of the telethon as he was in hospital undergoing surgery for his cancer. Although the operation was considered a success, the cancer proved more aggressive than previously thought; Eric Shaw passed away on January 12th, 2007, at the age of 17.
Laurier Live
Sir Wilfrid Laurier is one of the schools that broadcasts its morning announcements on television, formerly called "WilTV".
The 2006-2007 year proved to be the most popular, with high rankings in viewings thanks to the creative team of Willem Dunham, Sean Watson, Chandler Goudreau-Patterson, Joel Gadde, Morgan Kenny, Tom Potter, Brandon Bertrand, and Jordan Roy. Samples of their work for Laurier Live can still be seen on the internet.
The 2007-2008 annoucements were done by two anchors, Supreet Jaiswal and Danielle Dube. Two students, out of 6 who were given the opportunity to travel to Las Vegas for the National Association of Broadcasters conference in April.
