updated =August 1 ,2007 Amtrak 's Heritage Fleet program was started in 1977 to equip older cars from Amtrak's predecessor railroads tohead end power (HEP) from steam heat. Head end power is the use of electricity for lighting, heating and air conditioning for the cars, produced by generators in thelocomotive s. HEP conversions were performed at Amtrak's heavy repair center inBeech Grove, Indiana , outside of Indianapolis. The program was completed by the mid 1980s.Most Heritage Fleet cars have been retired from Amtrak service, but several remain, mostly
baggage car s. Others include the "Pacific Parlour" Hi-Level lounges and single-level diners. One former Great Northern Railway full-length dome is occasionally used on special trains.External links
