Vance A. Funk, III (born December 16 1942) is an American lawyer and politician from Newark, in New Castle County, Delaware. He is a Vietnam War veteran and the incumbent Mayor of Newark, Delaware.

Early life and family

Funk was born December 16 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the University of Delaware, in 1965, and received his law degree in 1968 from the Washington and Lee University Law School. He was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served a year in the 519th MP Battalion during the Vietnam War. He has two children, Vance and Kelly, and is a member of Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church.

Professional career

Subsequently, Funk became a real estate associate for Potter Anderson & Coroon, and in 1975 entered private practice. He was Resident Partner for the Newark office of Bayard Handleman and Murdoch, becoming Managing Partner for that firm in 1990. He returned to private practice in 2000 as a real estate attorney.

In 1972 he became alderman for the city of Newark, a position he held until 1986. He was also the Chief Judge for the Alderman Courts from 1980 until 1986. In 2004 he was elected Mayor of Newark. He is a member of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition, [http://www.mayorsagainstillegalguns.org/html/about/members.shtml] an organization formed in 2006 and co-chaired by New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston mayor Thomas Menino.
