Funk was born
December 16 1942 , in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania . He graduated from theUniversity of Delaware , in 1965, and received his law degree in 1968 from theWashington and Lee University Law School. He was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served a year in the 519th MP Battalion during theVietnam War . He has two children, Vance and Kelly, and is a member of Holy AngelsRoman Catholic Church.Professional career
Subsequently, Funk became a real estate associate for Potter Anderson & Coroon, and in 1975 entered private practice. He was Resident Partner for the Newark office of Bayard Handleman and Murdoch, becoming Managing Partner for that firm in 1990. He returned to private practice in 2000 as a real estate attorney.
In 1972 he became alderman for the city of Newark, a position he held until 1986. He was also the Chief Judge for the Alderman Courts from 1980 until 1986. In 2004 he was elected Mayor of Newark. He is a member of the
