Jaintia Kingdom

Jaintia Kingdom

The Jaintia Kingdom from eastern Shillong Plateau extended to the plains south of it and to the north of the Barak River valley in Assam, India. Jaintia is derived from Zantein, the collective name of different tribal groups from the region. The Syntengs are Mon-Khmer languages that are close to Khasi. The Jaintia hills is part of Meghalaya. What is today the Sylhet region was at one time under the jurisdiction of the Jaintia king.

The origin of the Jaintia kingdom is not known. But the Jaintia people follow a megalith culture that first found expression in the Shillong plateau in prehistoric times, which indicates that they are indeed settlers from very old times. After the 17th century invasion by the Kachari king Satrudaman, the Jaintia kingdom came under increasing Kachari and Ahom political influence.
