Hải Dương audio|Hai Duong.ogg|pronunciation is a city in Vietnam. It is the capital of Hải Dương Province. Its name is Sino-Vietnamese for “ocean” ().

Geography

Hải Dương city is bounded to the north and east by Nam Sách District and separated by the Cai River (literally, “mother river” in Vietnamese), and bounded to the west by Cẩm Giàng District, and to the south by Gia Lộc and Tứ Kỳ District, with a branch of the Sat River.

Administrative divisions

Hải Dương city was established in 1084, and was first called “Thành Đông,” referring to the citadel to the east of Vietnam’s capital of Hanoi. During the French colonial period, Hải Dương was a township. Before 1968, Hải Dương was a township of Hải Dương Province, and from 1968 to 1996 was a township of Hai Hung Province, because Hai Hung Province was merged Province of Hải Dương and Hung Yen Province at that time. On November 6, 1996, Hải Dương became the capital of Hải Dương Province as had been before. On August 6, 1997, the city of Hải Dương was established.

Hải Dương city includes 13 precincts and communes.
