She had previously held minor positions under PresidentRonald Reagan , and was also the Chairman of theRepublican National Hispanic Assembly .Ms. Villalpando has the distinction of being the only Treasurer ever sent to prison, for
obstruction of justice . She pleaded guilty to obstruction andtax evasion and assisted the government in its further investigation of corruption related to her case in return for the light sentence; originally, she had faced 15 years in prison and $750,000 in fines.Fact|date=May 2008Villalpando admitted, as part of her plea, that she received substantial benefits as part of a severance deal with a former employer, Communications International Inc., a company from Georgia for which she was a high-ranking executive. It is illegal for an employee of the government to receive material benefits from private companies or outfits.
