Ronald Gajraj

Ronald Gajraj

Ronald Gajraj is a former minister of the interior of Guyana. He was a member of the People's Progressive Party (PPP).

A major scandal erupted in 2004 when farmer George Bacchus announced that he had evidence implicating Gajraj, then the Minister of Home Affairs, in the operation of ‘phantom death squads' that killed up to four hundred people. Bacchus himself was murdered on 24 June 2004, leading to speculation and allegations about a cover-up.

After having been in office for six years, Gajraj resigned in 2005. His reinstatement in April 2005 led to an official protest from the US State Department that "Gajraj’s resumption of a key ministry, with direct authority over law enforcement activities in Guyana, undermines the rule of law in that country"."
