Sandøy is a municipality in the county of Møre og Romsdal, Norway.

Sandøy was separated from Aukra 1867.

The name

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm, and the small island, Sandøy (Old Norse "Sandøy"), since the first church was built there. The first element is "sandr" m 'sand', the last element is "øy" f 'island'.

Geography

Sandøy is an island municipality. Sandøy consists of 871 islands, but only five are inhabited. The main inhabitated islands are Harøy, Sandøy, Finnøy, Ona and Orten. Ona is the most famous of the islands and is a popular tourist destination.

Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from 1986. The three meeting points represent the light beams from the light house of Ona.(See also the coat-of-arms of Utsira.)
