The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Røyken (Norse "Raukvin"), since the first church was built here. The first element is "raukr" m 'pile, stack; mountain', the last element is "vin" f 'meadow, pasture'.
Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1967). The figure shows a
fire , to representsmoke (which cannot be depicted inheraldry ). The background for the motif is a common misunderstanding of the name as "røyken" - the definite form of "røyk" 'smoke'.
