Name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm Austrheim (Norse "Austrheimr"), since the first church was built there. The first element is "austr" which means "east" and the last element is "
heim r" which means "homestead" or "farm". Until 1889, the name was written "Østereim".Coat-of-arms
