Susan Baragwanath

Susan Baragwanath

Susan Baragwanath is a New Zealand educationalist and former political candidate.

Baragwanath is best known for establishing He Huarahi Tamariki, a school which aims to give "a second chance" to teenagers whose education was interrupted by unplanned childbirth. She founded He Huarahi Tamariki in 1994, having studied similar schools while on an Eisenhower Fellowship to the United States. Previously, she was deputy principal of Porirua College, having graduated with a BA, an MA, and a Diploma in Education. In recognition of her work, Massey University awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2005.

Baragwanath stood as a candidate for the New Zealand First party in the 2005 general election. She contested (but did not win) the seat of Auckland Central, and was ranked eighth on New Zealand First's list.

In February 2008 she could have entered Parliament as a New Zealand First list MP after the resignation of Brian Donnelly, but stood aside in favour of Dail Jones.

She is married to Court of Appeals judge The Hon Justice David Baragwanath.
