Western Power, owned by the Government of Western Australia, was Western Australia's major electricity supplier. Western Power was formed when the vertical monopolist energy supplier, the State Energy Commission of Western Australia, was disaggregated into separate gas and electricity corporations.

Ongoing reform in the energy sector prompted the Government to disaggregate the monolithic Western Power into four separate concerns:

*Regional: Horizon Power, both operates the regional electricity networks and acts as a retail intermediary for customers on those networks. It purchases electricity from private vendors in the area;
*Generation: Verve Energy, operates the generation plants servicing the South-West Interconnected System (SWIS);
*Retail: Synergy, the retail frontend for customers on the SWIS;
*Networks: A business named Western Power owns and operates transmission and distribution infrastructure in the SWIS. While it continues to use the name, this second incarnation of Western Power is fundamentally a subset of the original Western Power and is not considered and extension of the original.
