Robert Earl (born Monty Leigh in 1926) was a
singer oftraditional pop music in theUnited Kingdom in the 1950s and 1960s, whose style wasoperatic , like fellowcrooner sDavid Whitfield , David Hughes, Lee Lawrence andEdmund Hockridge .He enjoyed three chart hits during this period, while signed to
Philips Records : "I May Never Pass This Way Again" (#14) and "More Than Ever (Come Prima)" (#26) in 1958 and "The Wonderful Secret of Love" (#17) in 1959. He had a 15 year recording career from 1953 to 1967 always with Philips. In that time he made 28 singles in a total of 60 published songs. His agent wasMichael Sullivan , who also representedShirley Bassey .After a 20 year career as a professional singer he retired in 1970 and then devoted much of his time to the Grand Order of Water Rats showbiz organisation. He now [2008] lives in the USA.There is currently one CD of his recordings available, "The Magic of Robert Earl" (Spectrum).It is a mark of the esteem in which he was held by his peers that 19 years after he retired, in July 1989, that he sang the song "You'll Never Walk Alone" at the funeral of fellow Londoner Tommy Trinder. His performance on that day is reviewed in the magazine of The British Musichall Society.
