Dr. P. Shankar Rao is an Indian politician from the state of Andhra Pradesh. He belongs to Indian National Congress Party and a five-time elected MLA. He is presently representing Secunderabad-Cantonment constituency.[1]

Early life

Shankar Rao is the eldest son of RajaNarsamma and Rajaiah.He is a strong supporter of Telangana statehood. As a student he actively participated in the 1969 telangana movement.[2]. Later he joined youth congress.

Career

In 1983 he got elected from Shadnagar for first time and three more terms from the same constituency. He has been Irrigation Minister in Kotla Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy's cabinet. Along with Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy ("YSR") he played a crucial role as Dy CLP Leader when they were in the opposition.

He got elected from Secunderabad Cantonment Constituency in 2009, first time from that constituency and fifth time in all. He held different posts in the party and government in his political career of more than three decades .

Though he was a trusted aide to YSR he was sidelined by YSR himself due to internal pressure and politics which distanced Rao from YSR. He was close to MLA P. Janardhan Reddy.

He is presently the Cabinet Minister for Handlooms and Textiles, Small Scale Industries, Public Enterprises, Khadi and Village Industries, Spinning Mills. (Govt of AP) in Kiran Kumar Reddy's cabinet.

Personal life

Shankar Rao is married to G. Venkat Swamy's eldest daughter Vishwashanthi. He has two sons and one daughter.
